View ArticleChallenge your assumptions through visits to wildlife and conservation programmes in this remarkable country – from appreciating the complexities of the palm oil debate, to the struggles in the protection of endangered and vulnerable species. Malyasian Borneo’s unique ecosystem has diverse locations for you to learn about:
Malaysian Borneo is home to the world’s oldest primary rainforests, dating back 140 million years. This spectacularly beautiful environment boasts 200 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and 15,000 species of flowers. This is a place where wildlife-rich rainforests provide a haven for critically endangered orangutans, vulnerable sun bears, and clouded leopards.
As well as its extraordinary biodiversity, Malaysian Borneo is one of Asia’s mostly culturally diverse nations, with influences from several surrounding countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines and China. There are strong tribal identities here, each tribe having distinct traditions and culture.
Adventure is in the air! In Borneo, you can explore the varied landscapes on jungle canopy walks, trekking, river cruises, or even help to re-plant key areas of the rainforest!
Students can take full advantage of everything this beautiful and biodiverse island has to offer. This includes canopy walks in the tropical Borneo rainforest, learning bush skills and basic jungle survival skills. You can put these to good use on a 3-day trek into the protected forest of the Crocker Range and a Kinabatangan Rainforest community homestay. Keep your eyes out for sightings of the Borneo Big Five and meet Orangutans at the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
This is the ideal country to become immersed in a new culture, customs and environmental setting while engaging with global learning topics through trip activities, guided discussions and field visits. This plays a key part in the development of responsible Global Citizens who have a passion for positive change.
