Programme Overview
Our Zanzibar programme is the perfect way to push students outside their comfort zones and change perspectives. There’s a lot more to Zanzibar than its beautiful beaches and honeymoon hotels. The unique ecosystems here offer diverse locations to learn about:
- Marine Conservation: biodiversity, sustainable management of coral reefs, marine ecology
- Terrestrial Conservation: natural resource management, the protection of endangered species
- Alternative Livelihoods: poverty reduction, enterprise development through sustainable resources
The Country
Swahili culture, spectacular coral reefs, sandy beaches and coastal forests
The tropical island archipelago of Zanzibar is world famous for spectacular coral reefs, sandy beaches, and coastal forests. These varied ecosystems support many endemic and critically endangered species. Zanzibar is also an island of religious harmony, where various religions and tribespeople live side by side. It is not unusual to see Masai warriors greeting local Muslim worshippers on the way to the mosque.
Zanzibar is a great destination to learn about conservation and biodiversity because it is surrounded by some of the world’s best protected coral reefs and coasts. Away from the coast and the distinctive dhow fishing boats dotting the seascape, local farmers work in fields of rice or the spice plantations that give Zanzibar its rich history. Zanzibar’s National Park and the surrounding Butterfly centres are also now well-known biodiversity hot spots.
The experience in a nutshell
Global Action has developed the Zanzibar itinerary through a combination of strong partnerships with our local friends and ground partners, and personal experience (both our Managing Director and Operations Director have worked in Tanzania and Zanzibar).
We designed this trip to give students an outstanding environmental adventure. There are opportunities to collect environmental data, while learning about ecology, ecosystems, habitat biodiversity, conservation, global warming and sustainable development.
Students snorkel off sparkling coral reefs, carry out surveys to estimate the ecological state of ecosystems, and explore Jozani Forest, one of the world’s most important rainforests for biodiversity. You’ll also visit alternative livelihoods projects to learn how diversifying sustainable income generation can alleviate pressure on fisheries in this beautiful coastal environment, away from the booming tourism industry.

We will then email you a tailored proposal, which will include a full itinerary, all-inclusive price, and key documents for the senior management team.

Once you get approval from the SMT, we will send you key marketing material, including posters, to help promote the trip.

We will visit the school to deliver inspiring presentations in a short Morning Assembly and a longer Parents' Presentation 10 Days later
