Destination Manager insights – Zanzibar update

Destination Manager insights – Zanzibar update featured image

A Destination Manager’s job is constantly evolving, and it’s fair to say that everyone in the Global Action team loves to travel!

One of the key Destination Manager tasks is to recce their destination/destinations. ‘What does that mean?’ we hear you cry.  Well, Gemma was ‘away from her desk’ earlier this year, working at her international outdoor desk instead, so we asked her…

Where have you been Gemma?

Zanzibar! More specifically, I travelled all over the island exploring ideas in Kizimkazi Mkunguni, Uzi and Nungwi, as well as visiting our existing partners and looking for development ideas in Stone Town, Paje and Mbweni.

Why did you go there?

I had a lot of things on my to-do list for this recce! My main aims were to source additional accommodation, explore new NGOs in different areas of the island and complete audits and risk assessments on vehicles, activities, accommodation and providers. It was also an important opportunity to build on relationships with our in-country partners, ensuring we are all on the same page and prepared for the increase in capacity.

What did you do/discover?

We are always passionate about supporting and working with NGOs and local people that show our travellers the ‘real’ Zanzibar, rather than just the typical tourist activities, while making sure the activities align with our Global Learning aims. Some of the activities and providers that I met with, didn’t quite satisfy our requirements when it came to responsible tourism and safety, so I had to rule those out. However, I did find a couple of great new ideas that I am hoping to implement over the next few years. Some have already been trialled this summer and went down a storm with our teams!

How much do you love Zanzibar?!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I think Zanzibar is my favourite place I have ever visited! I arrived at my first hotel at sunset and headed to the rooftop just as the mosques started calling for prayer. The sound echoed all around the city as the sun went down – such a beautiful moment to experience. If you are lucky enough to visit, prepare to be welcomed into a vibrant culture by wonderfully friendly people, great food and the most beautiful scenery!
